A Shopify migration checklist for an existing online store

Plan a Shopify migration around products, customer data, redirects, connected apps, checkout testing and a controlled cutover.

A store migration is ready when customers can find the right products, complete the intended buying journey and receive the correct follow-up. Moving a product spreadsheet is only one part of that result. This checklist organizes the decisions an existing store needs to make before switching to Shopify.

Inventory the store you are actually running

List products, variants, collections, content pages, customer records, discounts, subscriptions and active integrations. Note which system owns stock, fulfillment and customer communication. Record the source of each dataset and the person who can approve its migration.

Include the less visible parts: gift cards, customer account access, review history, tracking events and app-specific settings. Do not assume every record moves through the same import. Shopify provides a migration checklist, but the exact transfer method depends on the source platform and the data involved.

Map products before importing the full catalog

Use a small representative sample first: a simple product, a product with many variants, a sold-out item and any item with unusual shipping or subscription behavior. Check titles, handles, SKUs, prices, images, options and collection membership after the import.

For example, a clothing store should check that a size and color combination maps to the correct image and stock record. A technically successful import can still produce the wrong buying experience. Reconcile counts and inspect exceptions before repeating the import across the entire catalog.

Give every important old URL a destination

Create an inventory of current landing pages and their intended destinations. Keep useful URLs where practical. When an address changes, map it to the closest relevant page rather than sending every old page to the homepage. Include images and downloadable content in the review.

Shopify supports URL redirects, subject to its routing rules. Test the actual redirect on the published destination, including its status and final page. Use Google Search Console and your analytics baseline to prioritize pages that already bring qualified visitors.

Rehearse the buying journey

Test product selection, cart changes, shipping options, discounts, payment, confirmation and fulfillment handoff. Review the mobile journey on a real narrow screen. Confirm that a customer sees accurate stock and pricing and that the operations team receives an order it can fulfill.

Test failure as well as success: an invalid discount, an unavailable shipping destination and an interrupted payment attempt. Use the platform’s appropriate test facilities and distinguish test orders from real transactions. Check connected email and analytics behavior under the store’s chosen consent settings.

Plan the cutover and the first week

Choose who can authorize the switch, what must pass before it happens and how to restore service if a critical problem appears. Agree how orders and inventory changes arriving during migration will be reconciled. Avoid having two systems silently competing to update the same stock.

After launch, monitor checkout, fulfillment, broken links and the pages that mattered before the move. Compare against the baseline and inspect specific failures instead of attributing every change to the migration. Ranking fluctuations can happen; a migration plan reduces avoidable mistakes but cannot promise unchanged search traffic.

Your checklist

  1. 01Inventory data, integrations and account owners.
  2. 02Run and approve a representative catalog import.
  3. 03Map and test important old URLs.
  4. 04Rehearse checkout and fulfillment, including failures.
  5. 05Assign cutover, reconciliation and post-launch owners.

A few common questions

Will customer passwords migrate to Shopify?

Do not assume they will. Confirm the supported customer-account migration process for your source platform and chosen Shopify account setup, then plan customer communication around it.

Can a Shopify migration happen without downtime?

The practical goal is a controlled transition with clear ownership and testing. Whether downtime can be avoided depends on the source system, domain changes, inventory updates and checkout setup.
